crown mountain

You won’t find this one on AllTrails but the name says it all. By no means a “secret trail”, the directions to get there are fairly simple:

  1. Head up to Emma Rd off Highway 82

  2. Take a left at the stop sign and follow W Sopris Creek Rd until you hit the first dirt parking lot (which will be on your right)

  3. You have to wind back pretty far so don’t be alarmed if it feels like it’s taking a long time - enjoy the gorgeous view of Mt. Sopris!

When you get to the parking lot you can either park and hoof it 2ish miles up to the top or you can drive up Crown Mountain Rd (closed for the winter starting Dec 1) for the same view. Along the way you’ll see various pull-offs with fire rings - which make for perfect spur-of-the-moment camping spots in the summer. At the top you’ll find panoramic views of the Elk Range, a bench, and fire rings - a great spot for a hiking break or happy hour if you’re so inclined.

In the summer the ground on this road is typically firm and dry, but during the winter it can be really muddy and mucky. Wear waterproof hiking shoes and expect to get a little dirty.

Let’s talk gear. For this expedition I went with:

  • Cashmere beanie - Madewell

    • They’re out of the exact one I have so linking something similar from them.

  • Patagonia Fleece - Worn Wear

    • Don’t be afraid to buy used! You get great deals, it feels like a treasure hunt, and is more sustainable than buying new.

  • Yuba Sunglasses - Sunski

    • I just had a traumatic experience trying to get my replacement lenses in but after about a week of trying on and off I was able to wrangle them in!

  • Osprey Kitsuma 7 - Osprey

    • My favorite day hiking pack. Holds 1-2 thin layers and has a built in 2.5L hydration pack.
